New Zealand casino licensing: entities and status

DIA has named the successful auction entities. Here is what their application rights mean—and why they are not yet a directory of New Zealand-licensed online casinos.

New Zealand licensing status

The regulator has published the holders of application rights. These are not issued casino licences or confirmed consumer brands.

DIA’s auction results: 11 entities, 15 application rights

The Department of Internal Affairs update of 13 October 2026 names the entities below. Each has secured the right to proceed to a licence application; successful bidding does not guarantee approval. DIA has not yet published the consumer brands that may be licensed. This is a regulatory status table, not a list of casinos open for signup.

Application rights, licences and brands are different

The statutory process has three stages: expressions of interest, a competitive process and a licence application. An auction result belongs to the second stage. Suitability and compliance are assessed before a licence is granted. Do not infer a consumer brand, website address or poker product from an entity’s name.

DIA’s player guidance expects licences to begin being issued from early 2027. When grants occur, check the public register required by section 74 of the Act. Its records must show the platform, licence dates, conditions and current status. A land-based casino permission, foreign regulator record or NZD account is not a substitute.

What the transition permits

Schedule 1, clause 1 of the Act concerns providers already operating when the provision commenced on 1 May 2026. Their temporary exemption from the unlicensed-conduct prohibition runs until 1 December 2026 unless they apply in time. For a qualifying application made before that date, the exemption ends on the earlier of the day after the grant or refusal is notified and 1 June 2027. This does not establish which consumer brand will eventually be approved.

Why there are no casino signup buttons here

The transition does not suspend the advertising prohibition. DIA’s advertiser guidance covers publishers and content creators as well as providers. We do not add casino promotions, affiliate signup links, ratings or “licensed” badges to the auction table. TAB’s separate sports service remains in the sports section; its auction entry is not an issued casino licence. See New Zealand support resources for help with gambling.
