Sweepstakes, social play and real-money casinos are different
The term “online casino” can describe products with very different rules. A state-licensed real-money casino accepts wagers under that state’s regulatory framework. A social casino normally uses virtual credits for entertainment. A sweepstakes model adds a promotional entry or prize system with separate eligibility and redemption conditions. The design of the website does not tell you which model applies.
Gold Coins and similar entertainment credits should not be confused with a cash balance. Promotional entries can use a different name, such as Sweeps Coins or Stake Cash. A purchase, where offered, can be for entertainment credits rather than a deposit that can later be withdrawn. A dollar symbol or a large virtual balance does not establish a right to cash it out.
Our licensed-casino comparison currently covers selected New Jersey-authorized sites. The following sweepstakes records are deliberately separate. They have no New Jersey licence badge, commercial ranking or fabricated safety score. Read the social-versus-sweepstakes guide if you are comparing the terminology for the first time.
Sweepstakes casino rules: three source-checked examples
Checked on 18 October 2026. These are alphabetical editorial examples, not a complete market inventory, recommendations or hands-on payout tests. A brand’s own exclusions are contractual restrictions—not a government-approved list of all lawful states.
Chumba Casino
Published model: separate Standard Play and Promotional Play. Terms version 27.1, dated 16 September 2026, identify VGW Games Limited as the sweepstakes provider and require age 21+.
Its promotional-play exclusions cover California, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Washington and West Virginia. Standard-play restrictions are different.
Important: Maryland’s regulator has separately issued a Chumba cease-and-desist. An omission from the operator’s exclusion list is not legal permission.
Stake.us
Published model: Gold Coins for Standard Play and Stake Cash for promotional play. The provider is Sweepsteaks Limited. Terms version 18, published 10 July 2026, require age 21+ or a higher applicable age.
Stake.us excludes Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia. Its terms also exclude other places where participation is prohibited.
WOW Vegas
Published distinction: the official eligibility article separates non-redeemable WOW Coins from SC prize redemptions. The article is dated 14 July 2026; it is a source snapshot, not confirmation of today’s individual account eligibility.
It excludes SC prize redemptions for residents of California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee and Washington. The article directs readers to the current SC Game Rules. We could not independently retrieve those complete rules during this check, so no bonus, redemption threshold or blanket availability claim is published.
Why some familiar brands are not shown as verified prize casinos
Search results and comparison pages can outlive a product change. We do not assume that a brand still offers the same prize system because an older review mentions Sweeps Coins. The current contractual document matters more than a stale welcome-offer table.
| Brand | What the current source establishes | Our treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Pulsz | Terms of Use version 5.2, updated 1 September 2026, describe virtual-credit entertainment, with separate promotional contests or giveaways. | Ongoing sweepstakes-coin prize model not confirmed; no old SC offer reproduced. Official terms. |
| Crown Coins Casino | The current Terms of Service describe social play, Crown Coins, subscriptions and day passes. | No assumption that earlier sweepstakes promotions remain available. Official terms. |
| HelloMillions | Terms updated 14 October 2026 govern Gold Coins and promotional contests; the homepage’s broader coin marketing is not sufficient to resolve the current prize model. | Current prize model not confirmed. The terms separately announce an Oklahoma exit on 1 November 2026. Official terms. |
State law overrides a marketing label
“No purchase necessary” is not a nationwide gambling authorization. State legislation and enforcement can address the actual prize system, dual-currency design, purchases, operation or promotion of a product. A platform calling itself social, promotional or free-to-play does not settle those questions.
New Jersey is not a sweepstakes alternative to the state-licensed comparison on our casino page. New Jersey’s enacted Chapter 128 prohibits covered sweepstakes wagering; it preserves limited ordinary promotional exceptions. Other states have their own prohibitions or enforcement positions. We do not create a green “legal in every other state” map by subtracting an operator’s restricted states from the country.
Maryland illustrates the problem: its regulator publishes illegal-gambling information and enforcement material. A brand’s terms and a regulator’s position can differ. If they do, do not use the operator’s broader wording to bypass the restriction. Our dated source checks are informational and are not legal advice.
What to check before interpreting a sweepstakes offer
- The exact domain and provider. Similar brand names can refer to different businesses and products.
- The current document date. Read the version applying now, not a downloaded copy from a previous year.
- Age, residence and physical location. These are separate conditions. Meeting one does not override another.
- The no-purchase route. Read the actual alternative method of entry, deadlines and eligibility. An optional purchase is not the same as a refundable deposit.
- Coin types and redemption. Identify which credits are entertainment-only, which entries can generate prizes and what further conditions apply.
- Verification and limits. Check the evidence, account-name rules and review process before supplying information through the official service.
- State restrictions and safer-play controls. Never disguise location, use another person’s account or treat play as income.
Our no-purchase-necessary guide explains the difference between entry and an offer. The coins and redemption checklist separates a virtual balance from an approved prize. Neither guide promises a bonus or payout.
Sweepstakes casino questions
Are sweepstakes casinos licensed US online casinos?
Not by virtue of using a sweepstakes model. A promotional claim, company registration or foreign licence is not proof of authorization as a state-licensed US real-money casino. Check the specific product and state.
Does no purchase necessary mean no conditions?
No. Entry can still depend on age, residence, location, deadlines, verification and the official rules. A no-purchase entry route is not a guaranteed prize or a way around a state prohibition.
Can Gold Coins be withdrawn?
Do not assume so. Entertainment credits can have no redeemable value. Where a separate prize system exists, it has its own rules. Read the names and conditions of both balances.
Are these the best or safest sweepstakes casinos?
No such ranking is claimed. This is an editorial rules directory. We have not deposited, entered promotions or timed redemptions to produce a hands-on review.
Gambling-like games can still cause financial and time pressure, including where purchases are optional. Use the US responsible-gambling resources if play is becoming difficult to control.
